Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
