Anthony Barry Shares His Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

In the past, Barry featured in League Two. Currently, his attention is fixed on helping the England manager secure World Cup glory in 2026. His journey from player to coach began as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his destiny.

Rapid Rise

His advancement is incredible. Commencing with his first major job, he established a name for innovative drills and great man-management. His club career included top European clubs, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with big names such as top footballers. Today, as part of Team England, he's fully immersed, the top according to him.

“All begins with a vision … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We have to build a methodical process that allows us to have the best chance.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Passion, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours all the time, they both push hard at comfort zones. Their strategies involve psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and building a true team. The coach highlights the England collective and rejects terms including "pause".

“This isn't a vacation or a pause,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”

Driven Leaders

The assistant coach says along with the manager as extremely driven. “We aim to control each element of play,” he states. “We strive to own the whole ground and that's our focus long hours toward. It’s our job not just to keep up of the trends but to surpass them and set new standards. It’s a constant process to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to clarify complicated matters.

“We have 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We need to execute an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we have to make it so clear in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from concept to details to knowledge to execution.

“To build a methodology enabling productivity in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. During periods without the team, we need to foster connections with each player. We have to spend time communicating regularly, observing them live, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”

World Cup Qualifiers

Barry is preparing on the last two in the qualifying campaign – facing Serbia at home and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed qualification with six wins out of six and six clean sheets. But there will be no easing off; instead. This is the time to build on the team's style, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that the style of play ought to embody all the positives about the Premier League,” he comments. “The physicality, the flexibility, the strength, the work ethic. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but light to wear. It must resemble a cloak and not body armour.

“To make it light, we need to provide an approach that enables them to move and run like they do every week, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and more in doing.

“You can gain psychological edges you can get as a coach in attack and defense – starting moves deep, closing down early. Yet, in the central zone on the field, that section, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information these days. They can organize – structured defenses. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”

Passion for Progress

His desire to get better is relentless. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns regarding the final talk, since his group contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he entered difficult settings imaginable to improve his talks. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners for a training session.

He earned his license with top honors, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard was among those won over and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom at Chelsea. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that the team dismissed nearly all assistants but not Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, within months, they secured European glory. When he was let go, Barry remained with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out away from London to rejoin him. The Football Association view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
