Powerful winter winds brought walls down upon flimsy shelters sheltering people uprooted by war in Gaza, killing at least 4 individuals. This tragedy highlights the dangerous living conditions that continue after over two years of intense bombardment and critical lack of aid.

Truce Provides Little Respite from Harsh Weather

Although a ceasefire has been active from October, aid groups state that Palestinians do not have the sufficient housing necessary to withstand recurring cold-weather events.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which received the victims, reported on this week that the deceased include two women, a girl, and a male adult.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a one-year-old boy died of extreme cold overnight.

"International actors has allowed us to witness death in all its forms," said a family member following the funeral. "While it is correct the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, three members of a one household — elderly a man, his teenage granddaughter, and his son's wife — were killed when an 26-foot tall wall fell on top of their dwelling in a area near the sea of Gaza City. No fewer than five additional people were injured in the event.

Family members on Tuesday began removing the rubble that had buried their loved ones and reconstructing the temporary homes for those who remained.

Humanitarian Distribution and Continuing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its aid organization allies were handing out tents, tarps, warm covers and clothing as well as nutrition and sanitation supplies throughout Gaza, said the relevant UN coordination body.

"Although 'bombings and shootings have decreased' under the ceasefire, they have not ceased," Elder informed journalists at a press conference in Geneva by video link from Gaza City. "Therefore what the international community now terms quiet would be viewed as a catastrophe anywhere else," he concluded.

Third Cold Season of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of over two million people has been fighting to keep the cold weather and bad weather at bay while enduring shortages of humanitarian aid and a absence of more substantial transitional shelter, which is urgently needed during the winter months. This marks the 3rd winter after the conflict between Israel and the group started on 7 October 2023, when militants attacked southern Israel and murdered approximately twelve hundred people and abducted 251 more into Gaza.

The local health authority says more than 71,400 people have been fatally injured in Israel’s military campaign.
