Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these medications must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
