Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD released security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
