Ultra-Conservative Ex- Congressman José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile New President.
In a decisive second-round vote, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
After more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having earlier been defeated by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Platform Built On Security and Migration
Known for his staunch Catholic views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was primarily built on promises to tackle increasing crime and significantly restrict immigration.
He consistently pointed to immigrants, especially the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the campaign, he gave an stern warning for them to exit before the new term begins or face expulsion.
His proposals envisioned controversial measures such as building holding facilities, border walls, perimeter fencing, and increasing the military presence on the northern frontier.
Within a Broader Wave
Several analysts view Kast's win as fitting into a broader right-wing wave in South America, similar to recent political wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other analysts further frame it as a part of the predictable swing of power between left-wing and right-wing governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Solid Majority
Despite his clear popular vote win, Kast will not command an absolute majority in Congress, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even if all rightwing parties are counted together.
This legislative situation could hinder his plans, such as a promise to reduce public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not detailed a clear explanation.
"There are many aspects about what a Kast government will be that are uncertain because he has not said how he will achieve them," noted a political science expert.
The expert continued, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see spending cuts common for the right-wing. However where there is much less uncertainty is on security policy, because that has been his workhorse during the race."
