A extended cruise around the Land Down Under is being halted days after the tragic passing of an older female passenger who was stranded by the vessel on a distant island.

The elderly woman had been walking on the remote island with other travelers from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the party for a break. The vessel left without her and came back several hours later after the ship staff became aware the passenger was not present.

An extensive search operation located her remains the next day.

Authorities are investigating the tragedy, alongside investigators and the official investigator.

The CEO of the cruise operator stated that passengers and staff on the vessel were notified that the rest of the cruise had been called off due to the "tragic passing and earlier mechanical issues".

Through an announcement, he further stated that travelers would be provided a complete reimbursement, and said the organization was working "to coordinate the return journeys of the individuals via chartered flights".

Authorities also released an updated communication, and said they had "provided a directive to the Master" prohibiting any additional guests from boarding the ship.

The representative said that they would attend the vessel in the Australian city upon its return.

Sequence of Events

The ship first departed the coastal city on October 24th, and was only 48 hours into the expedition at the moment of the 80-year-old's demise. The remote island was the initial destination on the itinerary.

Guests on the vessel - who usually pay large sums of dollars to take part in the cruise - were transported there for a day trip with the choice of hiking or snorkeling.

The offspring of the deceased woman said that her loved ones was "stunned and saddened that the vessel left the island after an organised excursion without my parent".

Via her announcement, she portrayed her mother as an "active elderly person" who was a participant of a walking club.

"Based on limited facts we have been told, it appears that there was a failure of attention and basic judgment," she stated.

She continued that she desired the examination would be able to determine what "the operator should have performed that might have protected Mother's life".

"We understand from the authorities that it was a very hot period, and she took sick on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"They requested her to return, alone. Then the ship sailed away, seemingly without conducting a roll call.

"At a certain moment in that chain of events, or soon after, mum died, by herself."

Company Reaction

In a statement, the CEO affirmed that the operator was "working closely with officials to aid their examination".

He stated that the firm was "very regretful that this has transpired" and had extended its total backing to the family.

Cruise Industry Standards

The vessel caters for up to 120 passengers with nearly fifty staff, according to official information. It was specially constructed to enter distant regions of Australia's coast and is fitted with "small boats" - small boats used to transport travelers on shore trips.

Incidents like this are uncommon, and passenger vessels have systems to record which individuals are getting on or leaving, according to industry experts.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] on the ship just isn't an option," a specialist commented.

Vessel operators consider these processes very seriously and have "sophisticated systems in place to prevent such occurrences from occurring," the authority continued.

"This appears to be probably a surprising - and sad - one-off."
