While Beachgoers Fled Violence, Widely-Shared Picture Depicts Rescuer Running ‘Pedal to the Metal’ Towards the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, views the famous coast as her back yard. On that particular Sunday evening, she, along with numerous others in the area, noticed loud noises reverberating around the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” she explains. She left her residence, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the road, speaking to a duo who had rushed up the incline still dripping wet, she heard someone moving up from behind. The person was a rescuer, sprinting in the direction of Bondi barefoot from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while transporting a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. It was just him moving in the path that everyone was trying to flee, and hauling that large equipment and unshod … He was sprinting towards something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would instruct you to run in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Courage Amidst Crisis

The image that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of moments of heroism in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, officers and medical teams treating numerous the injured.

Collective Outpouring and Support

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to be shared by the community, with the beach facility next to the scene of the violence transforming into a temporary treatment center. Accounts show that other team members were also seen taking action, such as entering the surf to assist people in distress.

Following the events, statements of gratitude circulated widely. An online statement expressed gratitude for the responders who showed that “compassion will always overcome evil”.

The team of lifeguards issued a message, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind words and support. We are touched by the kindness shown towards our personnel,” the organization wrote. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the hope that it supports those impacted.”

Council Recognition

Waverley council, the administrative organization that oversees many professional lifeguards, said that the staff rose to the occasion from the second the violence began through to late that night.

“We have heard so many emotional narratives, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help save lives is remarkable,” stated a mayor.

“Our lifeguards exhibit altruism every day in maintaining the safety of our internationally renowned shores safe for visitors, but what we saw on that day should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the horror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is crucial that we focus on just how much light we have seen in the face of such darkness.”
